And, coincidentally, discredited religious totems are on sale this week at half off. Don't miss the chance to own your own little piece of the bronze age ;-)

Everybody wants an easy answer. Thus we create enemies to vanquish, so that we may save the world by eliminating them. This attitude is especially perplexing when coming out of the mouths (or pens) of athiests, who for the most part, seem to espouse a more or less 'naturalistic' view of the world. Can't they see that conflict is embedded in the very philosophic fibre of Darwinian evolution? To strive for a better, more peaceful world is one thing, but to assert that religion is the cause of most of our problems is just silly. I'm one of the most anti-god guys one is likely to meet. However, I am also rational, and refuse to see things along the lines of political agendas dreamed up by wishful thinkers. I'd love to see a lot of this ancient mythology dissappear; it embarrasses me to think that we're still bowing to these totems hundreds of years after they've been thoroughly discredited. But I also realize that, critics notwithstanding, religion is usually just a means to an end, and that the real motivations behind warfare and violence are usually to be found in simple greed, and other ego trips. I'm not saying that religion is never a cause; but even then, it's usually a subsidiary cause that has its roots in something more fundamentally Darwinian. That's all I have to say for the moment...mm
